A new clue for separating Common Ringed Plover from Semipalmated Plover

The breastband of Common Ringed Plover may or may not be thicker than Semipalmated, but it always extends farther forward onto the throat, and the difference is most obvious in flight!

With the recent spate of records of Common Ringed Plover across North America (August 2026 — including first state records for Minnesota, Arizona, and Wyoming!!) I should have posted earlier about a new field mark I discovered a few years ago, which can help with separating these two species.

A “broader dark breastband” on Common Ringed Plover has been known for a long time as a distinction, but it is a vague and subjective feature. Some individuals of both species have broad breastbands, some narrow, and the appearance of the breastband is highly dependent on posture. Attention has shifted to other details like orbital ring color, the pattern of dark on the lores, and the shape of the white forehead patch. These details are fairly reliable, but require very close views and detailed study.

I am suggesting a focus on the upper edge of the breastband, particularly how it relates to the lower edge of the throat. You can distinguish throat from breast by checking the outline of the bird from bill to belly. There is a small change in the angle of the profile where the throat (feathers attached to the head) meets the breast (feathers attached to the neck). The breast bulges out a little bit, and you want to take note of the indentation where throat and breast meet. On Common Ringed Plover the dark breastband extends higher, onto the throat feathers, while on Semipalmated Plover this edge is lower, crossing the upper breast and leaving the entire throat white.

The difference mostly disappears when birds are resting, with the head pulled down onto the body and feathers all compressed together. It becomes more obvious when the head is raised or extended forward and feathers more spread out.

This feature is most obvious – and potentially most useful – in flight, when the head is turned in line with the long axis of the body, spreading the throat feathers to their maximum extent, with the added benefit that all birds are in exactly the same posture so comparisons are reliable and easy. Picking out a potential Common Ringed Plover from a flock of Semipalmateds (or vice versa) should be relatively straightforward. You’ll still need to see more details, or hear the call, to confirm the ID, but this should be an easy starting point.
